There’s a great new tool from SEOmoz that measures relevancy and keyword topics called, LDA.  LDA is an acronym (I’ll skip the acronym details) for measuring topics that are similar to each other and the relationship between them.  I won’t bore you with the algorithmic details, but suffice it say, this tool can measure your site’s relevancy by how well you discuss a topic and the keywords associated with that topic.

For example, let’s say I have a website that sells men’s suits.  There are topics and keywords associated with men’s suits that determine the relevancy of that topic compared to other topics similar.  So, if my content contains the keywords, “suits”, “ties”, “lapels”, “pockets”, “pants”, etc., I am more likely to be relevant to “men’s suits”.

This is a step-up from keyword stuffing.  Keyword stuffing would be adding “men’s suits”, “mens suit”, “mens suits”, etc. to the content of the page multiple times to have a repetition of that keyword.  This is considered spamming and Google has long learned this tactic and has therefore omitted the repetition when scoring your page.

So, the best thing to do is write relevant content that extends out from just “men’s suits” to other topics similar like “ties”, “pants”, etc.

Now here’s the great part of this tool:  it will score how well your site is NOT relevant for similar keywords or keywords that have multiple meanings.  For example, if I wrote a lot of content for “men’s suit cases”, this tool (and Google) would most likely lower your score for “men’s suits” and transfer weight to “cases”.

Therefore, ensure your topics are well defined and related to each other, as well as sub-topics or associated topics.  This way Google will see that you have a site containing a good amount of content for that particular topic.
